• Expression of happiness and sadness

Expression of happiness and sympathy adalah ungkapan yang digunakan untuk menyatakan perasaan senang/bahagia dan mengungkapkan rasa simpati. Beberapa ungkapan yang sering digunakan antara lain:

Happiness:

• I am happy to hear that.
• It was great!
• It gives me great pleasure!
• Fantastic!
• Great!
• It’s so exciting!

Sympathy:

• You must be very upset about it.
• I am sorry to hear that!
• I hope things get better soon.
• What a pity.
• That’s terrible!
• That’s so sad.

Expression of hope

Untuk mengungkapkan harapan, umumnya menggunakan kata hope. Ada dua cara penggunaan kata hope, yaitu

• hope + (that) + clause

I hope (that) you can make your dream come true.

I hope (that) you can pass the test and get good grades.

That boleh digunakan, boleh juga tidak digunakan.

• hope + to infinitive/be

I hope to be the best student.

I hope to sleep well tonight.

5. Your sister told you a landslide occurred in your uncle’s village.You feel sad and hope it doesn’t cause huge destruction. ~ Saudara perempuanmu memberitahukan bahwa telah terjadi longsor di desa pamanmu. Kamu merasa sedih dan berharap tidak terjadi kerusakan yang besar.

The conversation:

Your sister: You know what! A landslide occurred in our uncle’s village.

You: That’s terrible! I hope that it doesn’t cause huge destruction.
